Cock of the walk: Donald Trump to thrive in Year of the Rooster

HONG KONG: US president Donald Trump will strut through the Year of the Rooster, thriving as Hong Kong geomancers predict 2017 will be marked by the arguments and aggression — characteristics attributed to the animal.

With Trump at the top of the pecking order, the volatile traits of the rooster — combined with the year's signature element of fire — mean rocky times ahead, particularly in the western world, feng shui masters say.

"The rooster likes to pick fights, loves to have verbal arguments and is combative," Hong Kong soothsayer Thierry Chow told AFP.
Trump's inauguration was met with mass protests in the US and he has already riled China, prompting fears of a trade war between the world's top two economies.

Chow predicted he would ruffle more feathers in his first year as president.

"There will be a lot of strikes and even riots," says Chow.

Although born in the Year of the Dog, Trump can afford to be cocky due to his flock of faithful followers and his personal "bazi" element of earth, which is compatible with the fire element defining 2017.
According to the philosophy of feng shui, all events are dictated by the varying balances in the five elements that make up the universe: metal, wood, water, fire and earth.

"Bazi" are fate-setting traits linked to the exact time and date of a person's birth.

"The year will have all these elements, these people, these things and environment which will help him personally as a president," says Chow.

Possible SP-led bloc may upset Mayawati’s elephantine plans

NEW DELHI: The possible SP-Congress-RLD alliance may upset the plans of the BSP, which has been eyeing Muslim votes in the upcoming assembly elections.

BSP’s decision to field about 97 candidates from the minority community reflects its attempt to wean Muslims off SP and dent the incumbent party’s Muslim-Yadav support base. However, if the alliance is sealed, Muslims may not rush to desert the SP as the BSP has been hoping since the family feud broke out in the ruling party.

The infighting in the Yadav clan had raised hopes among BSP leaders that Muslims would find it a safer bet than a weakened SP. With Akhilesh Yadav appearing to emerge stronger after winning the battle for control of the party, an alliance could strengthen SP’s chances of retaining support of the Muslim community.

BSP chief Mayawati is closely watching the developments in SPCongress camp, said a party member. “BSP has nothing to worry in case of SP-Congress-RLD alliance.

We believe there is anti-incumbency factor. Besides, despite ruling at the centre, BJP has not done anything for UP,” said the member.

In the recent past, BSP has projected itself as a strong option to check the BJP in UP. If SP-Congress-RLD alliance becomes a reality, it may prompt the BSP leadership to adopt a fresh strategy to target the BJP and possible SP-headed alliance during the election campaign. “Behenji (Mayawati) may begin her election campaign from February 1. She has every possible challenge in her mind,” the BSP member said.

Cannot direct Centre, TN to frame special law on jallikattu: Madras High Court

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court today dismissed a PIL seeking enactment of a special law with conditions by the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government for holding jallikattu, saying it cannot issue such a direction.

"The court cannot issue such a direction," the bench, comprising Chief Justice S K Kaul and Justice M Sundar said while hearing a petition by K K Ramesh, Managing Trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation.

On a plea by advocate R Krishnamurthy for action against "illegal" gathering of a large number of people on the Marina beach here in support of jallikattu, the bench said it is an administrative matter.

"It is a matter of administration..., approach the government," it said.

Ramesh, in his PIL, submitted that jallikattu is a "bull-hugging" sport played in Tamil Nadu as part of Pongal festivities and is an old practice. Though it looked similar to Spanish bull-fighting, it was different in Tamil Nadu as the bull is not killed, he said.

The petitioner claimed many people had been killed in jallikattu events over the past few years, but not a single bull had died or been harassed, proof of which was there in government records itself.

Brexit: Boris Johnson says countries queuing up for trade deals

Other countries are "queuing up" to sign trade deals with the UK once it leaves the EU, Boris Johnson has said.

The foreign secretary also said the UK would not be "hauling up the drawbridge" despite new migration controls promised by Theresa May.

Mrs May set out her Brexit strategy - which includes pulling out of the EU single market - in a speech on Tuesday.

She also warned the EU not to try to "punish" the UK, saying she would walk away unless the right deal was offered.

With just over two months to go before the government is due to get official Brexit talks under way, Mr Johnson wrote in the Daily Telegraph: "We will no longer be part of the common commercial policy, or bound by the Common External Tariff, and we will no longer have our trade policy run by the EU commission.

"That means - crucially - that we will be able to do new free trade deals with countries around the world. They are already queuing up.

"Under EU rules, we are not formally allowed to negotiate these new treaties until we leave. But there is nothing to say that ideas cannot be pencilled in."

Mr Johnson also said the UK would "continue to share European values".

"We will continue the joyous exploration of other European culture and civilisation that has been expanding ever since the dawn of cheap air travel, and we will continue to welcome vast numbers of EU tourists to the UK.

"We are not slamming the door to migrants, or hauling up the drawbridge."
